WIN a Photography Book – Comment on this Post!

The folks over at Peachpit Press saw how many folks entered my last (first) book give-away contest — so they kicked down a few (TEN!) more for me to hand out! These are from their new book series, “From Snapshots to Great Shots” … these books are focused (no pun intended) on teaching you how to make great photographs, not just on every little dial and button.
To win one of these books all you have to do is comment on this post.
RULES: You can only pick one book, and make sure you specify in your comment which book you want. And if you win, Peachpit will pay for shipping! All you have to do is COMMENT!Β But, PLEASE be sure to enter your email address on the comment form or else I won’t be able to contact you.
The books you can win cover…
  • Canon 50D
  • Nikon D5000
  • Canon Rebel T1i
  • Canon PowerShot G10 or G11
If you own one of these amazing cameras, you need a book that goes beyond a tour of the features to show you exactly how to use your camera to take great pictures. With these books, you get the perfect blend of photography instruction and camera reference that will help take your images to the next level! These books are illustrated with large, vibrant photos from the author and the Flickr community — and they teach you how to take control of your photography, to get the image you want every time you pick up the camera.
Remember, to win one of these amazing new books all you have to do is write something clever in the comments area below β€” and mention the book you want to win. That’s it! ….Good luck!

  • Marshall Cant

I am yet to be convinced by Canon (or anyone else) why I would choose a G11 over a G10. Perhaps the G10-G11 book could help me decide. Plus the fact that Canon doesn’t supply “real” manuals with any of their cameras.

Many photographers cannot resist and enter the peachy contest.

I ramble and rhyme in hopes the G11 book becomes mine.

The Wilmont family had no children and decided to use a proxy father to start off their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Wilmont kissed his wife and said, “I’m off. The man should be here soon.”

By chance, half an hour later, I rang their doorbell hoping to make a quick sale of some baby photos. “Good morning madam. You don’t know me but I’m here to….”

“Oh, no need to explain. I’ve been expecting you,” Mrs. Wilmont cut in.

“Really?” I asked. “Well, good! I’ve made a speciality of babies.”

“That’s excellent. Come in and have a seat. So, just where do we start?” she asked, blushing.

“Well, I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch and a couple on the bed. Sometimes the living room floor is fun too; you can really spread out.”

“Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn’t work for Harry and me.”

“Well, of course no one can guarantee what we call in the business a ‘home run’ every time, but if we try several different positions I’m sure we’ll end up with something you’ll be very pleased to show your friends and the other mothers in the neighbourhood.”

“Uh, exactly how long will all this… take?” gasped Mrs. Wilmont.

“Madam, in my line of work, a man must take his time. I’d love to be in and out in five minutes, but you wouldn’t be happy with the results, now would you?”

“Uh, no. I suppose I wouldn’t after all…” Mrs. Wilmont responded with her voice trailing off.

I opened my case and pulled out a portfolio of some of my best work. “This was done on the top of a bus in downtown Manhattan.”

“Oh my god!!” Mrs. Wilmont exclaimed, tugging at her handkerchief.

“And these twins turned out exceptionally well when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.” I handed Mrs. Wilmont the picture.

    “She was difficult?”

“Oh, quite a hand full. In the end, I finally had to take her to Central Park to get the job done right. Why, people were crowding around four and five deep, pushing to get a good look.”

“Four and five deep?” asked Mrs. Wilmont, eyes widened in amazement.

“Yes, and for more than three hours too. The mother kept squealing and yelling the entire time. I could hardly concentrate. As the sun began to set I had to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just packed it in for the day.”

Mrs. Wilmont leaned forward. “You mean they actually chewed on your, eh……equipment?”

“That’s right. It was as if there were a bag of nuts they just had to get at. So if you’re ready to start, I’ll set up my tripod so that we can get to work.”

“Tripod??”, Mrs. Wilmont looked extremely worried now.

“Oh yes, I always use a tripod when I do this short of work. My equipment is to cumbersome for me to hand hold when I really get into my groove.”

…when she regained consciousness, I learned the rest of the story and made a quick exit.

If only I’d had read the Canon T1i guide, I might have known how to really work my ‘equipment’ to the satisfaction of all parties involved. πŸ™‚

    Or not.

  • Would love the Canon Rebel book – looking to upgrade my XTi soon. Thanks Fred!

I’ve been shooting with a Nikon D70 for many years now. I purchased a refurbished Nikon D5000 about a week ago. The quality was amazing. I didn’t even have the Nikon D5000 in macro mode, but it still did a nice job of capturing a nearby butterfly ( ). I think the book on the Nikon D5000 would be a nice and informative read after completing the user’s manual. I can definitely use all the help that I can get.

  • Marie Lewis

Hey Frederick, if I’m on a spot (in a situation) appears you have the solution! Great Out of the Box thinking. Been shooting Canon 20D, maybe the book 50D will in lighten my corners.

  • Vishal Anjukandi

Glad to know you are giving away the best selling photography books. I do not know how to make this comment interesting enough for you to make you give the NIKON D5000 book to me.

Well let me try. Hi Frederick Van, I ask myself questions. and try find the answers on my own for most of them. I have always dreamt of taking wonderful pictures. I own a Nikon D90 (hope my chances do not diminish when I say that) and have seen beautiful pictures that are born out of it. I havent unfortunately been able to give birth to a single master piece in a span of 6 months that I have been using this beauty. I love night Photography. but my pictures have significant amount of grain and noise. I follow the rule of thirds. I know what ISO to use in what condition. But higher ISO compromises on the quality of the picture.

So tell me Fred. How can my questions be answered? The book that you give away can help me out. IF you give me one I will be delighted. If you dont, I would possibly know it after an year or more. I would be losing so muchh of time in knowing rather than understanding.

    Thanks for the copy!

  • thanks for all the great podcasts! Love them all.

I especially like the one a while back when giving advice on how to get noticed by submitting work to papers and web editors. I followed this advice, because of TWIP, and got in contact with a Yahoo editor, who ran a story on me and another Smugmug user who have taken pics of movies filming in the Atlanta area.,ga

The story ran all day yesterday and some today. I was also contacted by an editor for ABC news who posted one of my pics on a slidshow they ran today.

Thanks for all the great advice guys – LOVE THE SHOW!!!!!

  • Love the podcast, Frederick!

Winning the Nikon D5000 book would rock!

  • Marc Skinner

I don’t have any of the 5 books you mentioned above, but I still think it’s very cool that you can give away guides to those units.

As an avid TWIP listener I had to have a look at your “twip picks of the week” which just happened to be a shameless plug of your new web site. I live down under (that’s australia for those that don’t know this great part of the world). Even though ‘american’ is a different language I love the podcasts with your great humour mixed in with some fantastic interviews and discussions on photography which has kept me amused for hours.

I don’t know if peachpit will ship the book to Oz but otherwise happy for you to pay for my first class flight to come and pick up my copy of the Nikon d5000 book!!

I could do with a D5000 book on the shelf don,t have many Photography books. Cool show Van !

  • Richard Mulvihill

The Rebel T1i is my goto camera. It would be nice to actually learn something about it.

I use a 50D and would put the book toΒ  good use

Can’t think of anything better than than to lay back and read a book on the Canon 50D while waiting for the next episode of TWIP. Well actually I can but this is not the place to bear all.

Interesting that you don’t have a dead line on this giveaway and this post is dated 2010.
I just don’t like that your gallery is so small. I was trying to figure out why people think you are so great and I didn’t see anything to show me your range of photos. Way to use the SEO. I guess it’s not working. I find more about myself and my model daughter than I do about you.

Love the blog, please enter me in your contest. I’m a Nikon shooter so that’s probably the book I would prefer.

Loving the content on this blog.

  • I’m been enjoying TWIP for years. First time reading the blog.

I didn’t know Peachpit before, I’ll right now check what they offer!. Thanks Frederic, really enjoy listening to your Twip episode!

This is still promoted on your homepage but appears to be a few years old Frederick. I’m guessing that the books are gone, but I’d gladly trade a book win for a new ALL ABOUT THE GEAR podcast any day! Cheers!
