WIN a Photography Book — Just Comment on this Post

UPDATE: THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. I’ve selected the winners. I’ll post a video announcing the winners names shortly. Thanks to all who commented — this has been amazing.
I have several really good photography books on my desk that I either have multiples of, or have already finished reading. So, in the spirit of holiday giving, I’d like to give four of them away! So how do you get one?
To win one, just comment on this post!!
You can only pick one book, and make sure you specify in your comment which book you want. And get this — if you win, I’ll even take care of shipping (US only!)
Of course, all of the books are about photography, but from various photographers’ “perspectives”. Here they are listed, with links over to Amazon.com so you can read their full descriptions (in no particular order):
1. Photographing Nature: A photo workshop from Brooks Institute’s top nature photography instructor
This is a book about making outstanding and stunning images of the natural world around us. If you’ve ever considered becoming a nature photographer, you know that it’s not nearly as easy as it looks. In this book the author takes you on a visual trip, shows you what gear he takes… and why. And how he’s able to make some of the most stunning nature shots you’ve ever seen.
2. Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs
A riveting book about how to “simplify” your photography. Chris teaches the reader how to participate in the story they’re photographing, rather than just capturing it. For lots of shooters, having too much gear just gets in the way. Chris talks about having a vision, and finding inspiration… then how to use the tools you have to effectively capture an image you’re proud to show off. Check out the audio interview I did with Chris here.
3. VisionMongers: Making a Life and a Living in Photography
A candid revelation of wisdom, ideas, and inspiration for photographers wanting to transform their photographic passions and hobbies into a full-time vocation. In this book the author shares stories from other noted photographers like Chase Jarvis, Zack Arias and more. Check out the audio interview I did with David, here.
4. A World in HDR
See the world from Trey’s perspective as he takes you into the world of HDR – High Dynamic Range photography. Not only does this book take you through the mechanics of creating convincing HDR images, but the Trey also takes you “behind the scenes” of how he created some of his most noted HDR images.
Remember, to win one of these amazing books all you have to do is write something pithy in the comments area below — and mention the book you want to win. That’s it!

December 26th, 2009 at 5:08 pm (#)
Frederick,
I would love to have the book “VisionMongers:Making a Life and a Living in Photography”. What I enjoy most about David duChemin is his focus on the “Why”. A lot of books focus on the technical aspects and the gear. However, true photographic creativity transcends that. I believe it is also what makes his stories so compelling. I heard on the TWIP podcast he also collaborated with other photographers. Therefore, to compile all those stories into one book is an awesome read.
I’d greatly greatly appreciate the opportunity to have that book. Thanks.

Frederick, I would really love that copy of Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs. I’m some what new to the world of DSLR and think that would help me improve a lot. If it helps I think you are the most awesome-est person to ever!!!! I mean, in ever in the history of the world!!! Is that enough sucking up?
To be completely serious, getting that book would make my weekend.
Thanks!!

Thanks for the opportunity to win a book. I would love to have the “Visual Poetry” book. I enjoy the TWIP podcast. It’s nice hearing you guys discuss photography (and the rat holes) each week. And it’s good to hear the differing opinions that each of you express too. Keep up the great work! Enjoy the holidays!

I like the metaphor you create with the fists to the head in the photo. These books are a good smack in the head out of being so gear obsessed. We forget it’s vision, not the latest and greatest gear that makes a good photograph. Visual Poetry would be a great one to have if possible.
December 26th, 2009 at 5:23 pm (#)
Awesome books by awesome authors/photographers that inspire us all. Yes, I would love to win one of the books!

I would love to read VisionMongers: Making a Life and a Living in Photography. Thanks for the giveaway!
December 26th, 2009 at 5:41 pm (#)
I just listened to the interview with Chris Orwig and a couple of things really struck a cord with me. First, I don’t want to be a laborer, I want to be an Artisan. I love the way I feel when my camera is in my hand, shooting never feels like work, it’s a joy. I would love the book Visual Poetry. Chris mentioned photography as a lifestyle. Learning to capture those moments in time with whatever gear you have sounds great. I don’t have a lot of gear so I think the book would be a great help.
Thanks for this wonderful giveaway!

Great idea Frederick. This year marked my intro into digital photography. It re-ignited my passion which lay dormant for many years. Trey’s HDR stuff was like adding gasoline to fire and now I can’t get enough. Would love to win his book. If not, no problem – there are so many deserving photographers. Take care and thanks for your giving spirit! Happy Holidays to you and yours this year.

VisionMongers
December 26th, 2009 at 7:15 pm (#)
I enjoy photographing nature and could use a book to learn more about it
December 26th, 2009 at 7:16 pm (#)
Here are my reasons for picking:
“A World in HDR”
-”Vision Mongers…” – I am not nor will I ever be a pro’ earning money from my photography…
-”Photographing Nature…” – Though I enjoy Nature photography, it is more of side show for me. I focus on architecture, technology,… kind of an opposite.
-”Visual Poetry…” – strongest competitor. I would like to learn more on inspiration/vision/meta-photography… But, it is something that can come from inside and is ones own expression. As much as this book can help it can damage (losing your own voice). Versus techniques of HDR, which are to be learned. Such knowledge definitely won’t come form “inside”. Technique will never harm your vision, it will help express it.
So, there it is…
Thanks for the opportunity
December 26th, 2009 at 7:19 pm (#)
Thanks for the giveaway. I would choose Vision monger or A world in HDR
December 26th, 2009 at 7:24 pm (#)
You’re so generous Santa Fredrick!
I just read the description of Visual Poetry and I’d love to read it. I’m a beginner and have a fairly good understanding of the technical side of photography but need inspiration in creativity.
December 26th, 2009 at 7:25 pm (#)
Would love to have Visual Poetry from Chris Orwig. Thanks for the giveaway Fred.Love Twip, keep up the god work.

Wow – thanks Frederick!
I’d already ordered “VisionMongers: Making a Life and a Living in Photography” after listening to your interview with David as I thought he was just a practical chap… Can’t wait to read it!!
So…. if I win, I’d love “Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs” as I have done one of Chris’ on-line training sessions and it was so helpful!
BTW, I think its AWESOME that there are so many of you GURUS out there willing to share your knowledge! I lie in a very remote part of Western Australia and have no access to the sorts of training courses I’d like (just getting into a career in photography.
PLEASE know that we are out here in cyber-land sucking up all the info you so generously share with us!!!!

I’d prefer VisionMongers. Now I’m going to try to stare down your photo at the top of the post.
December 26th, 2009 at 9:18 pm (#)
I would really like to take a deeper dive into VisionMongers. From all of the reviews I read, David duChemin wraps up every aspect of photography, including technology and social media. No photography book is complete without photos and this book has no shortage of great pictures. David has a natural way of capturing people in their natural elements.

I’d love to be able to read Vision Mongers!! I’ve wanted to get off my duff and order it for some time, but I just haven’t done it. Maybe this is what I need? Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Thanks so much for the opportunity, your generosity is appreciated!!

This is really great of you to do even if I don’t win. Heck, I never win. I say thanks and thumbs up. You keep the community strong.

Bring on A World in HDR. I am such a huge fan of Treys……..and of course, yours too.

How very generous of you Frederick. I should consider the same.
I already have VisionMongers — it is a marvelous book.
Visual Poetry would be my choice should this reply be selected.
Thanks for your hosting TWIP and the great ongoing interview series!

How very, very kind of you, Frederick!
You’re making this a very difficult decision for us, you know. Since I’ve already got DuChemin’s “Within The Frame”, and I’m currently reading “Fast Track Photographer”, I think the book I would most like to read next would be “Visual Poetry”.
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to win one of these fantastic books!
December 26th, 2009 at 9:50 pm (#)
TWIP rocks. Books rule. Read on. Surprise me.
December 26th, 2009 at 9:51 pm (#)
As much as I love Trey Ratcliffe….my photography equipment of one camera is as simplistic as you get…so I’d love “Visual Poetry”…that is, if I can enter..as I’m in Australia…but understand completely about the US shipping thingy. This is a generous thing u r doing & congrats to whoever gets these awesome books..from this AWESOME guy!!!!

Would love VisionMongers! Forgot to put it on the Christmas list! Thanks man.
December 26th, 2009 at 10:21 pm (#)
It is true that getting out and taking pictures is the first step to getting them, but sometimes the experience and advice of those who have gone before and succeeded can add a little more to one’s chance of getting it better than before.
Towards this end, I would love to have Ralph Clevenger’s photographing Nature. I have already ordered and received some of the other three books and am proud to be part of the community supporting these photographers.
Not wanting to diminish my chances, but if I am not selected to receive this book, I will purchase it.
December 26th, 2009 at 10:29 pm (#)
I would love any opportunity to learn more about photography. I am beginning to take my hobby to a new level and see all the major talent out there and sit in awe. I only hope one day to be half as good.
We did get a signed copy of the World of HDR and it came on Christmas Eve. The hubby was surprised and excited when I let him have that as his Christmas Eve present to open.
Thanks,
Tania

Both Visionmongers and A World In HDR are amazing books. I am already recommending them to anyone who will listen. Living up here in the wilds of North Eastern British Columbia, it would be great to try my hand at some wildlife photography, so please pick me to win that book on nature photography. It is so nice of you to do the give away, no matter who wins, my books usually get so tattered with use that they end up in binders at some point or another.

Hi Freedy V,
There is a Santa Claus afterall, being an avid lover of the great outdoors, and a photography enthusiast I think the book “Photographing Nature” would provide great insight to me and hopefully give my amateur photos that pop the desperately need.
Please find it in your heart this Hoilday season to bless me with “Photographing Nature”

A World in HDR
As you lay looking at me directly in the eye, I would like to thank you and wish you a happy holidays.
I am a big fan of HDR and trying to learn the techniques – it is not easy.
December 27th, 2009 at 4:32 am (#)
After I saw Trey’s HDR work on Flickr, and also from other well respected users, such as Ragstatic, Kris Kros, Erroba, Artie, WisoNet, and some others, I fell in love with this type of making photos. If you don’t try tonemapping procedure, you don’t know, what you are missing, I can tell you!
So, reading Trey’s tutorials and watching his photos, I upgraded my knowledge and work flow, when making my own photos.
His book, “A World In HDR”, would be great, to have in my book shelf and read it over and over again.
Thanks,
Boris

In a world where we are constantly exposed to new gadgets and programs that can improve our photographic potential, I really would like to lean back and read “Visual Poetry”. Far to many believe that the secret of great pictures lies in the equipment and programs – have a vision, a story and the images are bound to reveal a good story.
Visual Poetry would be highly appreciated reading.

What a conundrum! I’m asking myself which would best enhance my current collection of photography books. I am trying to engage the more visionary and artistic me, (I was a type A for 50+ years) and photography is my medium to do so. I believe Chris Orwig’s Visual Poetry would best help me to move to the next step – not only in photography but in my daily approach to life.

I found out about this through Trey Ratcliff. I am a big fan of his work and am learning hdr myself. I would love to have A World in HDR. Thanks for your generosity – even if I do not win.
Happy New Year!
December 27th, 2009 at 9:18 am (#)
I’ll take either one. Thanks for giving. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Wow that’s a lot of comments already! I’m for Visual Poetry. I’m a fan of Chris Orwig, especially after listening to him for 10 hours at lynda.com on the Lightroom tutorial. Very knowledgeable guy.

This is so cool of you. The book I would love to win is “Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs” I have checked this book out several times at the book store, but just haven’t had the money to buy it. It would totally be cool to win it.
Thank you for being so generous.

I got 2 book lites for Christmas. One lite is on Treys book; Visual Poetry would be great on the other!
December 27th, 2009 at 9:47 am (#)
I just listened to your interview with Chris Orwig. Excellent interview. Since I already have Trey’s book, I would love to add Chris’s book to my new collection of photography books. Trey Ratcliff mentions in his book that photographers are some of the nicest people you will meet. I believe that to be true.
Thanks and have a Happy New Year!

I would love to have Visual Poetry. I need some help!
December 27th, 2009 at 10:33 am (#)
Wow, what a very fine way to end the year. I don’t see how a person could go wrong with any of these four choices. My favorites would be the first two, but if I had to narrow it down to just one, then it would be ” Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs.” Several good reasons apply. First, I think the messages about simplicity, clarity of focus, and storytelling would apply to nature as much as anything else. Second, I don’t have a lot of gear to complicate the issue, so I like the idea of a book that is more focused on approach than on tools. Third, that main vision of the book — its emphasis on visual poetry — resonates. What a lovely, apt metaphor for photography. I love to write and create images with words, and I’m falling more and more in love with being able to exercise that same creativity and evoke beauty with a camera.

Would be great reading a nice book like “Photographing Nature: A photo workshop from Brooks Institute’s top nature photography instructor” If I get such a great gift I will add it to our University library (in Iraq), so more will get the benefit of it and no such book in our library.
Thanks for such activity, and good luck to all

His teaching style is straight ahead and, seeing and hearing him I feel like I know already. Having a copy of visual poetry on the reading list would be a great way to become a vision monger, all in HDR whilst taking a walk to photo nature. Beyond all the gear that is so easy to obsess about, we need to learn how to see what we are framing. I think that I would enjoy reading Visual Poetry. It’s already on my shopping list. Merry Christmas Frederick.

Thank you for giving a opportunity to win some wonderful photography books. I would love to read “A World in HDR”. I think it would be neat if you could put your name in all the books and ask for everyone to pass it on to other photographers. But for each photographer to sign below your name and see how many times the book was read.
Again Many Thanks!

One dictionary definition of imagery:
A group or body of related images, as in a painting or poem.
How sweet to consider the imagery of a wedding as a poem of their day.

I bought VisionMongers for myself as a Christmas present and it’s great! At the moment I’m halfway through “Photoshop CS4 for Photographers” on Lynda.com taught by Chris Orwig and I’m learning so much. Makes me wish that at almost 60 I could go back to college.
I’d love to win his book although the others look good as well. But as a beginner learning on my own, books that teach how to take good photographs without the most expensive gear are high on my wish list.
Thanks for sharing your books!

Frederick,
I’m a big fan and really miss you’re video podcasts that I used to watch on my Apple TV via iTunes. Haven’t had the time to listen to any off you’re audio podcasts yet, but will try to soon.
My interest would be Chris’s book – Visual Poetry.
With kind regards,

Here’s my attempt to write something pithy. I just hope I don’t pith all over myself.
I love TWIP. It’s my go-to podcast. You are doing a great job.
As for the book selection, I’d love to travel ‘A World in HDR’.
Thanks,

Ho Frederick. There are probably wayyyy too many posts in this thread for you to actually read. And seeing as to how I am way down to number 400 and something you will miss my humble post about how much I like your work and your approachable demeanor on your live broadcasts. So with that said Thanks again for keeping it real.
And if by chance you get this far, I’m really digging Trey’s new HDR book.

Got here from Trey’s link, but I think what I need as a newbie is Visual Poetry after reading the descriptions. I stuggle with feeling coming through my pics (and my camera sucks). BTW I turn 38 on Dec 30! Thanks.

Hello. This is a great thing you are doing. I would much appreciate this gesture of your kindness to provide a young learner of outdoor photography.
1. Photographing Nature: A photo workshop from Brooks Institute’s top nature photography instructor?
December 28th, 2009 at 12:14 pm (#)
I just bought my first DSLR – a Canon T1i and learning a lot. I love photographing nature and have been given hell by my family ever since I was a kid for having more pictures of trees, flowers, sunrises, sunsets, etc than people in any trip we went.
So, it would be lovely to win the Photographing Nature book so I can piss them off further with more nature photographs but may be something they will like looking at.
Again, thank you!

Frederick,
Thanks for the cool offer. I’d like to win the copy of “Photographing Nature: A photo workshop from Brooks Institute’s top nature photography instructor”. I already have a copy of “Visual Poetry”, so any of the other books would interest me. I’m trying to rebuild my photo book library since Hurricane Katrina wiped me out.
Thanks,
Irving

A World in HDR is an intriguing book to me…especially after seeing your first try at HDR. I still have a hard time believing that that was a “first” try. As good as the book is, I am sure being a fantastic photographer helps.

I am very new to photography, I have been listening to TWiP for almost an entire year not even owning a good camera so I was doing assignments with my iPhone at times. I have just purchased a D90 for Christmas and have taken more pictures of my son in the last week than in the last year (poor kid). I would love to read any of these books however 2. Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs sounds like the best start as a budding photographer. Thank you so much for everything you are doing with photography. You and Alex are such a great pair. Cheers.
December 29th, 2009 at 6:00 am (#)
Thanks for the chance to win. I think I’d love that book “A world in HDR” since I’m getting into that and want to do more in 2010. Of course anything would be appreciated. Love watching you and Alex on the podcast. Keep up the good work. Oh and I took your advice and got two of those Lexar UDMA 16G CF flash’s for my Canon 7D.
December 29th, 2009 at 6:06 am (#)
Any book by a Brooks Institute instructor should not be ignored. I’d like that one.
Love the podcast – every week – frivolity included.
December 29th, 2009 at 7:23 am (#)
Fred,
This is a great idea that you have come up with as usual! I have been listening to TWiP since the very first episode and have to say that I am addicted – so please don’t stop.
I concentrate mostly on landscape and nature photography, so “Photographing Nature” would be a great gift. But, I really need to get more comfortable photographing other subjects and above all (like you guys say) I need to make the subjects more comfortable. So, “Visual Poetry” would probably make the greatest impact on my photography.
Hope you had a great Christmas and have a happy new year! My theory is the more you celebrate, the better the following year will be for you.
