Chase Jarvis – Photographer

It was such a huge honor having the opportunity to interview Chase Jarvis. He’s one of my photography heros and continues to push the envelope with regard to leveraging both his talent as an image-maker, and his knowledge of emerging technologies to stay engaged.

He’s a photographer who’s name you probably have already come across if you follow photography movers and shakers. Chase’s clients include companies like Microsoft, Volvo, Reebok, Nike, and REI just to name a few. I was able to grab a few moments of his time to talk about how he managed to come so far, in such a short period of time.

Chase also revealed and discussed for the very FIRST TIME his new book with Peachpit Press “The Best Camera“, as well as his brand new iPhone application – “Best Camera“. The book is a set of photographs all taken with the iPhone camera and processed mostly with the secret (at the time) application.

Check out the interview and be inspired, then go download the app and start shooting and sharing!

Listen to the full audio interview, after the break.

I feel like what he is saying about the camera you have with you only applies NOW. I had a Palm Zire 72 back in the day and I loved it because it was my first “digital camera” even though it was a PDA. It had a 1.2 megapixel camera, but the quality of the photos were not that great. I remember I spent the day photographing everything I did in one day and then made a website of it and sent it to all my friends. Some of the photos were bad and you could hardly tell what I took a photo of or the colors were off. Maybe it was just me being a bad photographer, lol.

Even my last couple of phones have had .3, or .5 or 1. something MP cameras with not so great sensors. I know it’s not all about the MPs but even the censors where bad. The colors of the photos were bad. Certain parts of the photo would glow and other parts would show up washed out. Now the cameras on phones have gotten much better and you can walk around with them instead of a point and shoot. I know a number of people who have Tumblr blogs or regular blogs just for photos taken with their iPhones or other camera phones. I love the camera on my Pre. It is soooooo much better than the Centro. I always took photos with my Centro but now I take twice or three times as many photos with my Pre.

The iPhone app he created actually looks really cool, but until they put a camera on the iTouch (which I have), I won’t be able to use it. Hopefully he makes the app for the Blackberry, Android and Palm Pre. until then, maybe I can convince my coworker to get it and then steal … I mean borrow her iPhone a lot. hmmm …

Another good interview, but it seems to cut off part way through at the end?

Well, I’ve just listen to this interview, since I’m running the other way, from recent to old, and I just wanted to say that Chase’s inspired for sure many photographers out there, not only for his great creative capacity but also if his iPhone photography project. I really find it great how this things works, and have myself been involved in a similar project called http://iphonographist.com. So, thank you Chase, and thank you Frederick, for all your extremely well produced interviews!
