Frederick, I’m an aspiring (beginner) photographer. I love your TWiP podcasts. I’ve attended smugmug and meetup.com seminars. I’m always on the lookout for new stuff to learn and good online material. I love photography and the community. So… I decided to try out PhotographyMentor.com, and I have to say, it seems like complete snake oil to me. It’s facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/Photographymentor was most recently updated to push for more paid subscribership on Nov 2009. The previous post was in June 2008, and the only other posts were on May 12, 2008 pushing other products. That seems a shame, because I know there are other beginners like me who will be suckered into the one year $179 “auto-renew” subscription for which there is no easy way out. And why would I want a way out? I subscribed today, and I found there is no active social community. Nobody was online. There are no recent posts or videos worth anything. The facebook page specifies weekly video content from top pros. Their news page is BLANK. The site is broken and collecting dust… except for the trickle of new subscribers. Very Unfortunate. I was excited about finding another online learning resource, but this proves that you can’t buy or shortcut yourself to skill.

One guy tweeted that he thinks this is a scam. I have to agree.
